MOTHERSILL BY BATES MASI ARCHITECTS

Another summer retreat in the Hamptons

It might be time to think about making your summer retreat a little more permanent, and Mothersill by Bates Masi Architects will probably suit you perfectly. Located in the Hamptons, it’s not too far from New York City and yet just far enough.

No concrete, bricks or glass as you would find in Manhattan. Mothershill is in fact a complex structure. It is made of two distinct structures designed by Andrew Geller in 1962: a small house and a studio rearranged as a pool house. The main work consisted in adding the main central house, rearranging these existing elements, linking them together and creating a visual and spatial continuity.

Here, a light and soothing wood dresses the straight lines of the house. Long, thin wooden boardwalks create a hyphen between the house and the beach, while reminding us that we are in the Easter Long Island dunes. The wooden path blends into the natural landscape, but it also functions as a natural extension of the main building by linking the various elements of the house. This subtle reshuffle creates a beautiful uniformity and a house that is definitely retreat-worthy!
