LE COIFFEUR BY MARGAUX KELLER DESIGN STUDIO

A Marseille hair salon that refreshingly incorporates local traditions

In a country where design culture tends to be concentrated in Paris, Margaux Keller Design Studio is a breath of fresh air. Unlike her fellow graduates of Ecole Boulle, the young designer chose to set up camp in Marseille. Recently, she teamed up with Bertrand Guillon Architecture to design the Le Coiffeur hair salon in Marseille’s newly renovated docks.

Owned by local stylist Pascal Lancien, Le Coiffeur is a modern and inviting space that stays true to its southern roots. Keller included hexagon floor tiles give a nod to the very traditional tomettes, and designed the shampoo station to resemble the cabins of Marseille fishermen. Even the muted sea tones are reminiscent of the adjacent Mediterranean Sea.

The space was also designed with client privacy in mind. The hooded mirrors of the individual La Coiffeuse tables, designed by Keller, preserve a sense of intimacy, and the shampoo cabana is placed discreetly at the rear of the salon. In contrast, the waiting space is open and inviting with its splashes of yellow that brighten the otherwise muted blues and grays.
