GRES HOUSE BY LUCIANO KRUK

A Brazilian house in the middle of the rain forest

Currently under construction in Itauna, Brazil, the Gres House project by Luciano Kruk helps us refocus on a major existential debate in architecture: is a building supposed to adapt to its surrounding environment or adapt the environment to its convenience? Well, even if growing environmental concerns have made the answer more and more obvious, only a few houses have dared going as far as this project. The Gres House is located in the middle of the dense rain forest and it’s not a surprise if the concern for local environment was so important, considering the extensive deforestation. Luciano Kruk decided to solve this issue with several simple principles.

First, he came up with the idea of incorporating the forest into the house. This was done very naturally with two nice patios giving the sensation that the forest invaded some of the house’s interior, taking back what was hers. This feeling of the forest taking over the house is highlighted by a second simple idea: vast window walls. The house is entirely opened and transparent. Whether it is inside or outside, large windows create an invisible barrier between the elements, allowing the forest to be seen from everywhere. This see-through house gives the sensation the forest was never interrupted by a wall built by man.
