GERMANS SOLER BUTCHERY BY PAU SARQUELLA FÀBREGAS

A family butcher shop undergoes an elegant transformation in Spain

Generally speaking, a butcher shop is rarely a haven of modernity. But things are changing. When a family butcher shop in Ceràs, Spain, passed to the next generation, the sons decided to give it a visual update with the help of architecture firm Pau Sarquella Fàbregas.

Starting from the inside out, the family began an excavation of the building by revealing hidden floors, unblocking windows and restoring the vaulted brick ceiling. White became a dominant theme, covering the walls and beams as well as the custom-made product cases. Pinewood shelves borrow from traditional Scandinavian design and add an element of warmth.

Hoping to attract additional clientele from the busy road that passes directly in front of the shop, the family started by making the shop easily visible. They brought the white to the outside and accented it with a single dark strip that begins on the side and continues halfway across the front.

On the strip is the silhouette of a pig, which completes the minimal-yet-discernible decoration. A simple neon highlights the exterior in the dark, inviting visitors even in the dark.
