FUJIGAOKA M BY SINATO

An "inner terrace" cleverly divides space in this Japanese home renovation

Fujigaoka M is the renovation of an apartment for a married couple in Fujigaoka, Japan. In order to preserve light and airflow throughout the relatively open 64-square-meter floorplan, Tokyo-based architecture firm Sinato designed a multipurpose wooden structure to divide the space.

Referred to as the “inner terrace”, the wooden structure envelopes the central load-bearing wall and is at once room divider and functional element. It provides an internal buffer between the sleeping and living space, but it is also the link between the two. Much like a giant piece of furniture, the “inner terrace” can be used to store books, to hang pictures and even to sit.

The architects also placed the washbasin in the central living space rather than in the bathroom, acknowledging its central function in the home and thus the importance that it not be tucked in away in a dark corner. Overall, the layout and integration of individual elements was planned to best facilitate movement of both the inhabitants as well as air and light.
