FLIPBOARD CAFE BY BROLLY DESIGN

A 25 sqm sit-down cafe in Melbourne

25 square meters doesn’t seem to be big enough for a sit-down cafe. One thing is for sure : to do that, you’d have to use space in a clever way. This is how it was done for the Flipboard Cafe. The first thing was to use the vertical volume of the tiny space by implementing a multi-level organisation. Small spaces found during the renovation of the front facade are used as cozy cavities where clients can sit and enjoy their beverages outside, while remaining sheltered. Inside, the staircase plays a determining role in the dynamic of the space, ensuring the transition between our horizontal logic to the vertical logic of the café. It creates a nice space in the middle of the café and establishes a separation between the coffee making/buying area and the chilling /drinking spaces. For these last ones, creative thinking made the best of the limited space. Nooks and niches have been set up near the windows in the spaces left by the staircase. To complete the whole design, wood has been used proficiently to create a warm and cozy place.
