FELIPE ASSADI EMBEDS CONCRETE ARTIST’S STUDIO INTO ROCKY CHILEAN COAST

A sunken studio that provides a deliciously isolating experience

Chilean architect Felipe Assadi, whose modular housing concept we presented earlier this summer, has carved a painter’s studio into the rugged coastline near Los Vilos, Chile. The studio is an extension of the architect’s “Bahia Azul” home and borrows the home’s raw concrete to create a respite from the outside world. Straight and narrow, the studio’s rigid horizontal and vertical lines are in direct contrast with the principal building’s gentle slope and also serve to emphasize the minimalism of the space. A floating stairway leads to the simple rectangular room that is devoid of openings save for a single floor-to-ceiling window that carefully frames the view. Skylights along one wall allow natural light to softly illuminate the space. Users can also slide the window open to access a protected balcony for painting or simply taking in the perfect isolation.
