Simplicity reigns at this South African retreat

Perched on the edge of a privileged property in Knysna, South Africa, Cove 6 is one of only six residences to be permitted in the private estate of the Pezula Golf Estate. The partners at Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA) were tasked with the creation of a residence that would reflect the surrounding fynbos (the native shrubland found in a small portion of the Western Cape of South Africa).

Materials were chosen to complement the natural colors of the landscape as well as for their minimal impact on the environment, both during and after construction. Heavy stone walls root the structure to the soil, yet the overall impression is one of levity. The fynbos was also brought up to the house in order to make it feel like a continuation of nature.

To highlight the exceptional views, outdoor space was maximized with large glazed windows, private terraces and open decks wherever possible. The living space was arranged to ensure an open, flowing layout that consistently leads to a spectacular panorama. Every aspect of the home defers to its surroundings with an elegant simplicity that cultivates a natural haven on the coast.
