COMPACT KARST HOUSE BY DEKLEVA GREGORIC ARHITEKTI

A contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Slovenian stone houses

Slovenia’s Karst region is a beautiful contrast of thick forest and naked limestone. Stone could even be called a defining element of their country with the porous rock forming incredible underground rivers and legendary caves. The Compact Karst House by Lubljana-based firm Dekleva Gregorič Arhitekti is a modern interpretation of the countryside’s windowless stone structures.

Modern technology blends with tradition for the home’s exterior. Clad in stone, the cool gray seamlessly blends with the modern cement roof, mimicking the traditional pitched stone roofs of the region and forming a monolithic volume that defines the interior.

Indeed, the warm wood interior directly contrasts with the chilly exterior, but it is a solid, unified space that is divided by two wooden volumes on both floors. The ground floor encompasses the central living space with the kitchen, dining area and bathroom. It functions as a semi-public space with picture windows offering views of the local church, the forest and of the adjacent Italian countryside.

The second floor is perched under the pitched roof, providing more privacy for the bedrooms. A wooden bridge connects the sleeping spaces and serves as the children’s playroom. Each bedroom functions as its own “house within a house”, a sensation that is intensified by the sloping roof.
