BELLEVUE TERRACE BY PHILIP STEJSKAL ARCHITECTURE

A residential extension with a modular skin that blurs boundaries

Adding an extension onto an existing house is an architectural art form of its own, and with the Bellevue Terrace, Philip Stejskal Architecture has created an award-winning piece of art. Beginning with a 19th century duplex in Fremantle, Western Australia, the architects added a modern extension that can be fully open or entirely closed thanks to a smaart system of wooden shutters and movable panels.

The project was undertaken to make the transition from interior and exterior more fluid by bridging a floor level difference between the house and the garden. It consists of an open air dining room, a small bathroom and a stepped terrace. Three levels in various materials (brick, wood and then concrete) create a neutral interior/exterior space where residents will be tempted to linger.

At once functioning as a perfect extension of the original house and its own entity, the modular space gives owners a new level of flexibility in how they relate to their environment. For its aesthetic and innovative solution, the extension received the 2014 Western Australia Award from the Australian Institute of Architects.
