ACE HOTEL BY ATELIER ACE AND COMMUNE DESIGN

A gothic landmark turned into a hotel

What do you do when you have to renovate the interior of a decadent landmark? Do you try to emphasize the architecture by making smooth and modest interior design choices, or do you see things on a large scale and try to compete with the facade? Well, if the answer is obviously the second one, the problem is you have to at least equal the extravagance deployed outside. With a building like the 1927 Ace Hotel, you’d have to reach the top. Indeed, at the time, Los Angeles was a mash-up of various architectural styles, and this building has been inspired by the Segovia Cathedral in Spain. Gothic style in L.A. for a movie mogul.

A partnership between Atelier Ace and Commune Design was made to reinvest in the Ace Hotel and rival the modern and Gothic architectural mix. The interior of smooth concrete has been balanced with warm materials and colors. A patchwork of vintage inspirations team up with a modern conception of interior design and local craftsmanship. Indeed, most of the furnishings, custom lighting and finishes were made by local artists and artisans. Last but not least, the Theatre at Ace Hotel has been completely renovated. A beautiful celebration of a Los Angeles cultural legacy.
