3GATTI suspends fiberglass sheets to form undulating retail installation

layered white translucent fiberglass sheets have been suspended to create a distinctive interior by rome and shanghai based studio 3GATTI for the ‘SND fashion store’ in chongqing, china.

led by architect francesco gatti, the concept started from the appeal of hanging everything from the ceiling and freeing the floorplan for open circulation. ‘we imagined an elastic ceiling that was pulled down by the weight of these various objects.’ explains gatti. ‘we used a very thin white translucent fiberglass material because of its fire resistance and the way it reacted to light, thus creating a ceiling landscape that would be a spectacular source beauty and emptiness; perfect for every fashion victim.’

more than 10,000 pieces make up the dynamic ceiling installation to form an abstract landscape; developed through computer software. recycled timber was used on the floor and walls, while the store’s façade was left transparent to invite people to explore and view the distinctive retail space.
