Gorgeous prefab alpine restaurant tops a Swedish ski slope

A gorgeous alpine restaurant awaits skiers atop a snowy slope in northern Sweden. Stockholm-based Murman Arkitekter recently completed Björk—Swedish for birch—a 350-square-meter restaurant set next to a ski lift in the resort of Hemavan.

Assembled from prefabricated timber elements, Björk boasts panoramic mountain views and offers a menu with locally sourced ingredients and Lappish microbrewery drinks.

Located along the top tree line near a row of birch trees, Björk serves as a beautiful landmark destination that’s both unique in appearance and looks natural on-site. The building was prefabricated off-site and carried onto the mountaintop via a temporary road. The architects drew inspiration from the local Sami culture of the indigenous Finno-Ugric people for the building’s triangular glulam beam structural system. The steeply pitched volume allows snow to gather around the edges and helps blend it into the surroundings. The panels of untreated wood that clad the facade will also develop a beautiful patina over time to match the environment.

The clean and minimalist interior is lined with untreated timber such as durable pinewood, and features built-in-place pinewood benches and tables. Carpeting on the floor helps prevent slipping. Glazed gable end walls and large windows invite views of the outdoors and natural light. The restaurant seats 80 guests on two floors and will offer an international menu with locally sourced produce and beer from a local Lappish microbrewery.

“We wanted to make a landmark and a building that reveals how it is constructed from a distance, a distinctive and unique look that feels natural on the site and at the same time is easily constructed with prefabricated parts,” said the architects.
