Krygina Make-Up Studio in Moscow by Archiproba Studios

Located within a classical eighteenth century mansion in Moscow, Russia, local architecture and design collective Archiproba Studios recently converted a former outdated office space into a fresh make-up studio for Russian makeup artist Elena Krygina.

The compact one-hundred-and-fifty-square-metre space was stripped of the 1990’s fit-out and carefully re-planned to consist of an entrance hall, rooms for manicure, hairstyling areas, small and large connecting halls, a private client room and a courtyard terrace.

With much of the building’s original period architectural and design detailing removed during its former incarnation as an office space, Archiproba decided to carefully restore the nineteenth century textures glass doors, a hangover from a previous fit-out, as well as the antique railings on the main stair. Beyond these vintage details, the architects created a simple, contemporary monochrome interior shell with a minimalist touch.

“The interior does not aspire to a particular category or a style. The project aims to find a new architectural identity by crossing contrary methods, structures and textures.”

A textured ceiling, white-washed walls and painted timber floors provide a crisp backdrop allowing details such as the fluorescent colour accents in the custom-designed joinery and furniture to truly pop. Clear, simple white spaces with black furniture and large mirrors befitting a space dedicated to aesthetics sit alongside rooms enveloped in lusciously flowing velvet drapery and front-lit mirrors layering the space with a sense of theatre and backstage glamour.

“The concept of the project is to obtain theatrical allusions in the space, where each room delivers a unique character and atmosphere thus affecting the visitor’s experience.”
