New Bordeaux Stadium by Herzog & de Meuron

Herzog & de Meuron's design for the New Bordeaux Stadium merges functionality, structural logic and context in a single architectural gesture. A 'bowl' containing the game and its spectators rests on a stepped plinth that protects the building from floods, and is supported by a forest of thin white columns. The volume is configured for optimal visibility from each of its 42,000 seats. Its exterior walls cantilever over the open-air concourse, which serves as a transitional space between the outside world and the game. The structure will be ready to open in 2015.
