White Arkitekter's Stunning Hotel Extension Blends Swedish Architecture With Japanese Interiors

Swedish firm White Arkitekter recently expanded the Yasuragi Spa Hotel with a gentle Japanese touch.

Located near Stockholm, the concrete and blackened timber extension was built right on top of the existing wings overlooking the forest and nearby bay. Featuring 27 new rooms, this lean, stylish hotel marries Swedish architecture and traditional Japanese decor. You'll love the interiors -- for photos, feel free to hit the jump.

Japanese architect Yoji Kasajima built the Yasuragi Spa Hotel back in 1970. Located on Cape Hasseludden, it was first used as a conference center before it was turned into a Japanese-style hotel in 1997. Its new brilliant extension follows the original aesthetic and aims to “play with the same kind of materials and style but in a more modern and minimalistic way.”

Made from concrete and local blackened pine cladding, the naturally lit, new higher-level allows magnificent views into the Höggarnsfjärden Bay. The peaceful interiors feature Japanese-style furniture, textiles and patterns all made from natural materials that emphasize the connection to the surrounding nature. The architects explain the Scandi-Japanese blend, “Modern Japanese and Swedish style have many similarities in their minimalist simple expressions and we have taken advantage of those similarities”.
