Brilliant Garage Apartment Maximizes Space With Custom Multi-Functional Furniture
Maximizing its space,This collaborated design that creates a magnificent interior and exterior.
This garage near Laurelhurst Park in Portland is actually an Auxiliary Dwelling Unit topped off with a brilliant space efficient apartment. Designed by PATH Architecture, the Laurelhurst Studio provides flexible space for the homeowners to use as a guest quarters, an artist studio or a yoga room. PATH Architecture collaborated with Phloem Studio and Earthbound Industries to build in custom multi-functional furniture into the steeply pitched roof to make the most of the space.
The garage renovation was designed by PATH Architecture to create a versatile space for the client that could be used as a guesthouse, an apartment, an artist’s space, or a yoga studio. An updated garage with a warm wooden interior sits at ground level with a studio apartment above accessed via an external staircase and a deck. The interior is naturally daylit with large windows on the south and west sides and shaded with a large roof overhang. The ADU, which meets the City of Portland’s accessory dwelling unit (ADU) design standards, completes the backyard that includes a courtyard, hot tub and outdoor kitchen.
A steeply pitched roof on one side limited the apartment in terms of space, so PATH worked with Phloem Studio and Earthbound Industries to design custom built-ins and furniture from rift sawn white oak to maximize it. Fitted into the north side of the apartment are a series of low and deep cabinets as well as a desk and a built-in couch. Under the desk fits a full size dining table and four chairs that can be pulled out into the middle of the room for work or guests. The couch pulls out into a bed and extra cushions and bedding can be stored behind the wall. A bathroom is tucked behind the kitchen and ample storage makes the space feel open and inviting despite the limited size of the apartment.
