Disneyland mountain house is a modern interpretation of the vernacular architecture of Alsace

This retirement home for a couple located in an Alsatian village puts an interesting spin on the local building policy focused on minimalism and tradition. Architecture studio GENS: Association Libérale d'Architecture designed the house as a contemporary response to traditional mountain architecture by exaggerating some of its trademark elements.

Merging contemporary design and traditional elements, the house, named Disneyland, reinterprets the regional vernacular. The building policies in the village of Zutzendorf in France insist on building structures that will fit perfectly into the existing context. In order to comply with the strict regulations, the architects included a steeply pitched oversized roof that references the shape and incline of a neighboring house and overhangs a partially glazed ground floor.

The house only shows a tile covered gable roof, hiding the contemporary loft underneath. Ground floor is a free space, totally opened to the south facing garden; simply structured by a sauna and a shelf. On the top of this first house hovers another one, a retreat hidden in the bush of the industrial carpentry, looking down over the first one or escaping to the remote landscape.
