NYC: A Floating Food Forest

An “edible barge” may soon become the latest draw in the Big Apple

The Swale Project is about to launch a floating garden that challenges traditional notions of public space. It will serve at once as artwork, science experiment and a source of inspiration in the search for eco-solutions in an age of dwindling resources and expanding populations. Various teams are contributing technical expertise to ensure the smooth integration of solar power, water pumping and filtration, greenhouse and monitoring systems. A long list of diverse food and other plant species will be grown, and the barge will travel New York’s waterways to maximize public exposure.
