Huge lattice canopy made with brick and steel shelters Paraguay’s Quincho Tía Coral pavilion

Brick is definitely making a comeback. A huge hovering lattice structure forms a multi-purpose space in Asunción, Paraguay.

Designed by Solano Benítez, Gloria Cabral, and Solanito Benítez of Gabinete de Arquitectura, the Quincho Tía Coral pavilion creates a minimalist expanse stripped of all decoration, accentuating the raw qualities of brick and steel. The 160-square-meter (1722 square feet) venue includes a semi-covered area and a small swimming pool, set amidst lush vegetation. Its large canopy is supported by the perimeter wall and a V-shaped steel pillar. The canopy casts an intricate pattern of shadows during the daytime. At night, a discrete lighting system creates an intimate atmosphere.

Inspired by outdoor barbecues installed at the back of urban lots, the Quincho Tía Coral pavilion references the original function, but reinvents it, thereby expanding its purpose.
