milan's apple store by foster + partners will feature an outdoor amphitheater

new images have unveiled more details of the highly anticipated apple store in milan, italy. developed by foster + partners, who has an ongoing collaboration with apple, the flagship location seeks to introduce a different retail model, unique to its other locations around the world.

located at the heart of the city center, foster + partners’ response is a reference to the original architectural solution of a piazza. the project will not only introduce apple to the city, but will also transform its surrounding public space. the retail area will be discovered underground, while above, an open amphitheater will represent a public space of ideas — permanently open as a lively place of socialization and gathering. as well as an elevator located at plaza level, a large glass screen will mark the entrance into the below-grade store.

although a date is yet to be confirmed for the opening of the store, apple’s adapted approach to its retail model will focus on giving customers and visitors a more immersive experience and not only a destination to find products. a calendar of events ranging from photography to music hopes to enliven the area and invite people of all ages to participate.
