stefano boeri to bring vertical forest tower to utrecht's new urban district

holland’s first vertical forest by stefano boeri will be constructed in the city of utrecht after winning the competition as part of a larger urban plan of introducing the new jaarbeursboulevard district. two high rise buildings will sit as neighbours: one by boeri and the other by dutch studio MVSA.

recognized for his buildings which bring living and nature together, the 90 meter tower stefano boeri architetti attempts to create, in utrecht city center, an innovative experience. named ‘the hawthorn tower’, its façade will host around 10,000 plants of different species (360 trees, 9,640 of shrubs and flowers), equal to 1 hectare of forestry. once completed –estimated by 2022–, the tower will be able to absorb more than 5,4 tons of co2.

on the ground floor, directly connected to the roof garden on the sixth floor, the tower will host the vertical forest hub, a research center based on urban forestation worldwide. an open space visitors can learn about the technical and botanic solutions chosen for the tower and to follow the progress of other vertical forests under construction in the world.

facilities including offices, fitness and yoga areas, bike parking places and a public leisure space will define hawthorn tower’s recognition as the new healty centre of utrecht. located in the heart of europe, the utrecht vertical forest follows the other urban forestation projects designed by boeri. among them: tower of cedars in lausanne, vertical forest in nanjing and other green buildings planned in paris, tirana and shanghai.
