#COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE PROJECTS

"Tagarelis" optical culture

The project is about an almost double-the-average-ceiling height space, located within the town’s centre, on the junction of two main streets.

Right from the start, the main design objective was to create an atmosphere of classic elegance and minimal aesthetics, cleverly combined with a sense of warmth, comfort and luxury. The basic idea was to treat the shop’s product as a showpiece and consequently design a space which will give it prominence. The careful selection and use of the materials, the design forms and the colour palette all contribute to the accomplishment of the desired result.

Making optimal use of the available space, the design team managed to include all of the shop’s functional requirements in a rather small surface area. The organization of the floor plan was based on a clear design placing functionality as a top priority. The main exhibition and sales area is close to the shop’s entrance, while the cashier, a small workbench and a loft including a metal staircase, which leads to the auxiliary spaces, are at the back.

Special emphasis was placed on achieving a balance between the different textures and materials. The warmth of wood and the matt and grey Italian terrazzo tiles on the floor are wisely combined with shiny surfaces of metal elements in dark and bronze colours and those of white marble.

The long side of the shop’s wall is covered with wooden paneling which is interrupted by three white marble panels with glass shelves, which serve as the products’ wall display. The required storage space below the display wall is also covered with wood in order to create a unified result. The centrally positioned display table is a solid piece of furniture with a wooden base and a marble top, which divides the space’s flow, offering not only storage space but also a display surface for the collective and special eyewear collections.

The shop’s two-sided glass façades offer abundant sunlight into the space. At the same time there was a need for additional display areas. To obstruct the light as little as possible, light metal structures in black colour were combined with perforated bronze sheet metal panels for the vertical display and pedestals were used for box-like displays. These were placed along the length of the glass facades and serve as display areas visible from both the interior and the exterior of the shop.

The colour palette of neutral, earthy hues allows the “luxury” of the white marble to stand out, while the distinct blue colour and the lighting’s gold touches adds a pop character to the final result.

As for corner shop’s exterior, its display advantage was on its own an element that should emerge in the design concept. It was thus completely redesigned and a dark-coloured, metal grid was placed in front of the glass façade on both sides of the ground floor. A white colour was used for the main volume of the building, while the overhangs of the first floor were painted in the same dark grey colour matching the metal grid and new vertical sunshades in matt gold color now complement the shop’s exterior design.
