six design concepts have been unveiled as part of a competition to restore and rebuild ‘clandon park’, an 18th century palladian mansion in surrey, england. the international contest was launched in march 2017, with a brief tasking entrants to reimagine the grade II listed structure in the wake of a devastating fire in 2015. the proposals, which include schemes by amanda levete’s london-based firm AL_A as well as US practices diller scofidio + renfro and selldorf architects, are set to go on display at the historic estate from august 23. see the complete shortlist below.

the competition brief called for designs that work with the existing building and blend with its garden setting. the renovation plans also include restoring the mansion’s damaged interiors on the ground floor and basement, while introducing flexible event spaces on the first floor to be used for gallery and exhibition programming. other visitor facilities, such as catering and retail outlets, were also to be considered as part of the ‘careful and accurate restoration’.

the six shortlisted teams, selected from 60 entrants, are each led by an architect but include design, conservation, structural engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, interpretation and landscaping experts. the winning team will be announced in autumn 2017 by a jury of heritage, architectural, and local experts.

the national trust — the conservation organization who maintain the property — will then work with the winning team to produce the final design, which be revealed in mid-2018. subject to planning permission and listed building consent, construction work is expected to begin in 2019.
