Vineyard Schmidt's striking tasting room is wrapped in a vertical wooden lattice

Standing at a top of a hill, overlooking the Lake Constance and the Swiss mountains in the south, the Vineyard Schmidt doesn't go unnoticed.

Designed by Elmar Ludescher Architekt, this architectural masterpiece in Germany shelters a wine cellar and bar with stunning views into centenarian vineyards and orchards. Its glazed skin is wrapped in vertical wooden ribs that passively filter the sun protecting its interiors.

Although the same family has run Vineyard Schmidt for generations, this stunning wooden building is completely new. Located among rolling hills and luscious farmlands, it was designed to shelter the production of fruits as well as for deluxe gastronomy and wine tasting. Making the most out of the difference in elevation, the architects placed the wine cellar at ground level where the air is cooler and the space darker.

While on then floor above, the wooden dining and wine bar opens up to welcome fresh air and plenty of natural light inside. With amazing views into the nearby Lake of Constance, this minimal eatery floor is also the entrance to the loft, where the wine tasting happens. Designed with a focus on wine production and pleasure, this beautiful sculptural building shelters a family tradition in a contemporary way.
