bamboo restaurant and bar in vietnam are shaped like conical hats

bamboo architecture firm bambubuild has constructed a restaurant and a bar in kim bôi, a rural district of northwest vietnam’s hòa bình province. the buildings form part of an ecotourism resort, where the site’s architecture has been designed to reflect the appearance of a typical vietnamese village. the restaurant, the larger of the two structures, emerges from a previously existing concrete structure which had been left abandoned.

topped with a thatched roof, which recalls the appearance of traditional conical hats worn in vietnam, the building takes the form of a 12-sided polygon. bambubuild took advantage of the site’s existing architecture, using it to support the bamboo frames to span an area of over 700 square meters (7,535 sqf). soaring to a total height of 15 meters (50 ft), the structure provides encompassing views of the restaurant’s natural setting.

the structure was assembled on the ground before being lifted in to position with the help of a crane. known as ‘tầm vông’, the bamboo used is as strong as steel, yet is easy to bend if required. at the center of the roof canopy, which spans a maximum of 32 meters (105 ft), a skylight measuring 1.5 meters (5 ft) in diameter welcomes natural light. bambubuild has also completed a poolside bar as part of the complex, which features a similarly shaped roof canopy, but employs a different bamboo construction method.
