bjarke ingels group revises design for the oakland A's new ballpark

as bjarke ingels group (BIG) continues to gather input from public officials, fans, and community members, the proposed design of oakland A’s new ballpark continues to evolve.

the plans first presented in november 2018 have now been updated to feature a more circular park, where the new geometry ensures a more intimate experience during games, better views from inside the ballpark, and a more seamless and efficient way of navigating the 34,000-seat stadium as well as the surrounding neighborhood.the design retains its continuous rooftop park, which can be used by both fans and the wider community. the oakland A’s new arena, located on the howard terminal waterfront, would form part of a new development that also includes high-rise towers, offices, and retail space. the project also involves the transformation of the team’s current stadium — located nearly six miles southeast of the new site — into a tech and housing hub.

‘our design for the A’s new home at the heart of oaklands revitalized waterfront seeks to return the game to its roots as the natural meeting place for the local community,’ said bjarke ingels when the project was first unveiled. ‘the perimeter park connects a cascade of social spaces for the fans to enjoy the sport on game days and extends the urban fabric with a neighborhood park to be enjoyed all 365 days a year. in other words — we are bringing the ‘park’ back in ‘ballpark’.’

BIG has also unveiled a transportation solution to provide access to the new venue — a gondola lift. the aerial mode of transport would take fans from near the oakland convention center/12th street BART station to water street at jack london square, with easy access to the new arena. BIG and the oakland A’s will now continue to work closely with the local community to further refine and improve the design. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
