Fairphone’s Amsterdam offices built inside an old warehouse using reclaimed materials

Amsterdam-based firms Melinda Delst Interior Design and Studio Modderman designed the new headquarters for smartphone manufacturer Fairphone as a space which reflects the company's focus on ethically sourced materials and modular appearance of their products.

The new open-plan office space is nestled within an 1884 warehouse in Amsterdam and is built from reused and environmentally-friendly materials.

The smartphone manufacturer wanted to create its workspaces as transparent offices built from reused materials. Most of the original structure of the warehouse was preserved, including wooden roof trusses and supporting steel columns. The layout was dotted with freestanding modular components made of wood, which act as meeting rooms offering higher levels of privacy. These boxes also comprise Skype booths and meeting spaces, and were built from reclaimed window frames from the building.

Old floorboards made from rubberwood were used in other parts of the space, including bleachers on the back of one of the pods. This area acts as an extenuation of the meeting room. Despite the limited budget and tight deadline, the team managed to complete the building in just two and a half months.
