nico van der meulen wraps kloof road house with morphed steel
south african practice nico van der meulen architects have completed their latest project located on a generous sit at the foot of a nature reserve in johannesburg.
name ‘kloof road house’, the distinctive property was designed with the aim to create a family oriented environment, integrated for a multitude of indoor and outdoor activities. maximizing views towards the north, each room has doors opening to the outdoors and connecting to the landscaped gardens surrounding the property.
a black, morphed cladding wraps and distinguishes the sculptural form of the house where steel, glass and concrete have been predominantly used throughout. the double height living room, dining room, kitchen and lanai are situated in an open-plan area and seamlessly blends into one another as one single space and the polished concrete floor extending to the lanai. constructed with angled columns supporting the steel beams and the roof, these structural elements keeps to the sculptural theme, and is highlighted by the angled steel roof of the entrance hall and the geometrical steel staircase.
M square lifestyle design translated the architectural concept of kloof road house into the design of the interiors. steel perforated panels and off-shutter concrete were amongst the elements used for the interior, while the design of the lighting defines the bold and angular forms of the structure. mimicking the same material palette, this visually links the inside and outside.
