john wardle architects kicks off NGV initiative with bright pink pavilion
the summer architecture commission is a new annual initiative by the national gallery of victoria that showcases both emerging and established architects through structures installed within the institution’s grollo equiset garden.
australian firm john wardle architects was given the honor of creating the inaugural design, which was unveiled as a luminous, nine-meter high, bright pink pavilion.
the piece is made of 1,350 hand-folded textile blooms, and pays homage to the iconic sidney myer music bowl in melbourne. steel and timber are used alongside the textiles, which are formed into high arches that provide a protected outdoor space. wardle and team utilized 3D modeling in accordance with top-of-the-line engineering and fabrication techniques to create a generously-sized, and lightweight form. the pavilion is adaptable and emotionally evocative, and will host a variety of live music performances, panel talks, kids’ activities, picnics, and other events during its display until may 1st, 2016.
