WE WANT THAT OFFICE! SOUNDCLOUD BERLIN BY KINZO

KINZO converts a Berlin brewery into the headquarters for Soundcloud

Soundcloud is one of the most innovative and widely used music platforms on the internet. For the design of their Berlin headquarters, local architecture firm KINZO was charged with designing a flexible and creative space that could easily expand with the rapidly growing company. To do so, they converted 4,000 square meters of a disused brewery into a three-storey office.

The industrial aesthetic of the brewery was left intact with exposed brick, cement floors and visible wiring, but the architects designed a contemporary space that perfectly fit the young company’s culture. Half of the space is even intended to serve as a venue for tech talks, meet-ups, networking and other events within the Berlin tech community.

Designed to be flexible, the headquarters are currently housing the 180 Berlin employees, but can comfortably accommodate up to 350. The adaptable work space provides a mix of quiet, individual corners, informal community areas and closed meeting rooms to meet various employee needs. Areas are divided with bright colors and neon lights that boast the names of neighborhoods in London, New York, San Francisco and Berlin.

Acoustics were central to the project because, duh, music, so the architects experimented with the use of drop lights and sound-absorbing materials throughout the space. No major structural changes were made with the exception of the integration of a two-storey atrium and staircase that provides a center of communication and a versatile space for receptions or panel discussions.
