WALKER WORKSHOP DESIGNS A DISCREET BUT STUNNING CALIFORNIA HOME

Oak Pass is a Beverly Hills home that is all about the view

Los Angeles-based design-build firm Walker Workshop has designed a home in Beverly Hills, California, that capitalizes on the view while preserving the natural landscape. Over 130 protected oaks can found on the property, so the team created a subtle structure that uses an “upside down” layout to limit the visible surface area.

Unlike traditional homes, the bedrooms of the Oak Pass Home are placed below ground level and underneath the principal living space. The entire lower level is buried into the hillside and further hidden with a green roof, offering privacy for the residents and reducing the home’s visual footprint. To counter any potential claustrophobia, a courtyard was also inserted into the lower level to allow ample daylight and airflow to the secluded space. In contrast, the upper level is completely open with uninterrupted glazing offers panoramic views throughout the living area.

The home is principally made from structural concrete, reducing the number of columns needed to support the structure. Natural materials were used for the flooring including limestone for the upper level and walnut for the lower. To top it all off, an infinity pool lies parallel to the upper level and glides under one of the property’s oldest trees.
