VILLA MONJA BY ENFORMA STUDIO

A modern and transparent interior in a 19th century house

What to do when you want a modern looking apartment in a Unesco protected building from the 19th century? Montenegrin architects Enforma Studio have come up with a wonderful answer to this quandary with their Villa Monja in Ljuta, Montenegro.

By keeping the exterior walls as they were and creating a brand new, transparent interior, they’ve developed a project that escapes time as we conceptualize it. By interlacing the traditional architectural style with modern design concepts, they have created a bright and luxurious residence from a rough piece of history.

To meet their expectations, Enforma Studio has based its work on the mapping of 3 areas with different atmospheres that can be seen in the architectural plans: a bedroom area, a central gallery and a fireplace area. All of these spaces extend vertically on 3 different stories delimited by the stone walls and some wooden structures. But what really makes this house so fantastic is the fact that the architects got rid of horizontal limitations in the different areas by using transparent glass as separation. The result is breathtaking.
