THE BLUFF BY LAZZARINI PICKERING ARCHITETTI

Modern meets traditional in the English countryside

Nestled in the idyllic countryside between London and Oxford, The Bluff is a contemporary single-family residence. Lazzarini Pickering Architetti replaced the original cottage on site with a Miesian assembly of steel and glass that opens an interesting dialogue with the trimmed hedges and manicured lawns of the traditional garden.

In direct contrast with the home’s modern feel, visitors are greeted with a grandiose roundabout surrounded by impeccably trimmed, leafy arches. A central square joins the two principle rectangular structures and serves as the veritable heart of the home. In this central space resides the owner’s collection of books and art. It is a space that inspires conversation and interaction. The rest of the interior is designed to be a flexible space that adapts to user needs.

Large glass doors and windows open the house to natural light and the peaceful surroundings. To protect the house from unwanted regards, it is settled lower along the hillside. Adaptable shutters provide additional privacy but can also serve as temporary partitions. A gravity-defying cantilever gives the impression that the house is floating, adding the final touch of modernism.
