SCHOOL BY LCR ARCHITECTES

French Middle School in Labarth-sur-lez

A first glance at this impersonal, very rectangular and repetitively designed building leaves the viewer in a quiet state of depression. We could confuse it for a factory. This is not the case, however. It welcomes French middle school students—a failed attempt to entice them into showing up for class.

Let’s not be too hasty. The school, located in Labarth-sur-lez, near Toulouse, has some positive points. The building has copper panels and features sliding shutters that can be closed to seal it up like a Zip Lock bag. In reality, this adds a level of safety that can only be commended. The students, most likely relieved by the safety provided, can enjoy the coolest aspect of the space without reason to fret: a bike park with a canopy supported by tree-like metal structures.

LCR Architectes’ goal aimed at meeting high environmental standards and offering an efficient education space. By implementing expansive copper panels, aluminum bars and glass surfaces, the façade is made to stand out and connect with its natural surroundings. The interior has a predominating orange tone to create a transition from the brown exterior.

“The copper, a material that is natural and alive, serves the intention of giving the building a skin with a patina that will smooth with the age while also reinforcing the value of sustainability,” stated the architects.

There are two floors designated to the logistics, catering, social, general and specialized functions of the school. The architects seem to have succeeded in achieving their ultimate objectives for this project, yet we cannot help but wonder how students feel emotionally when eyeing such a detached structure.
