NEW MEETS VINTAGE AT LE 205 IN MONTREAL

A former workshop is transformed into a home for designer and his family

Atelier Moderno’s 2014 project Le 205 is located in the Mile-Ex district of Montreal, Canada. Standing rather unnoticed among its neighbors, this former 1950’s workshop houses the likes of a designer, his two sons and their terrier. Beyond the recomposed façade lies a minimalist interior, which includes a wide corridor extending north and south, a party wall of exposed masonry and well-defined living spaces that promote an ambiance of intimacy yet privacy.

The common area contains the living room, dining room and a fully-equipped, ultra-modern streamlined kitchen. The boys’ rooms, master bedroom and a private bath distinguished by various construction materials lie beyond the common area. A green roof terrace can be accessed by way of a single stringer staircase, allowing the inhabitants to benefit from their urban surroundings.

Many measures have been taken to reduce the house’s carbon footprint, from the use of antique furniture to the enhancement of existing structural elements such as doors, windows and gratings. In addition to preserving existing aspects of the building, skylights, soy-based spray insulation, radiant slab heating and a green roof contribute to the environmental consciousness of the house.
