ZAHA HADID’S LIBRARY & LEARNING CENTER IN VIENNA
Zaha Hadid's centerpiece for the Vienna University of Economics and Business.
Whether or not you like her work, Zaha Hadid is absolutely everywhere. A few years ago, the Iraqi-British architect won the competition to design the new Library and Learning Center, one of seven buildings of what is about to become the largest University of Economics and Business in Europe (23,000 students and 1,800 staff). This amazing building will be the central piece of the Austrian university. The 28,000 square-metre building is topped with a large and inclined black volume, perched over the roof that contrasts with the smooth white lines of the interior. The straight lines of the exterior separate as they get inside, becoming fluid and giving the interior a new dimension. Library, tutorial rooms, cafeteria, event space and administration offices…students will have plenty to do in the building that will be open 24/7. It almost makes us want to be a student again! Almost.
