(-) GLASS HOUSE BY CHARLES WRIGHT ARCHITECTS

A tropical interpretation of the Philip Johnson Glass House

Recipient of a National Commendation for Sustainable Architecture from the AIA Awards earlier this month, (-) Glass House is an eco-friendly revisitation of the 1949 Philip Johnson Glass House – without the glass. Adapting the structure to a tropical climate and adding a generous dose of eco-friendly elements (the house functions as a Carbon Neutral structure), Australian architecture firm Charles Wright Architects constructed a new type of modernist icon. The house is set far back from the road and surrounded by a garden of lush foliage to which the main living areas of the house are completely open. Bedrooms, bathrooms and an office were constructed as ‘pods’ and protected with sliding glass panels. A central, covered courtyard houses a delicious swimming pool which radiates with the natural light filtering through the massive skylight. Hoping to serve as an example of sustainable architecture, (-) Glass House is powered entirely by renewable energy and the roof harvests rainwater which is stored in a 45,000 liter in-ground water tank. We also hope this becomes the model of sustainability. Absolutely gorgeous.
