GARCIA RESIDENCE BY MARMOL RADZINER ASSOCIATES

How to renovate avant-garde architecture

Los Angeles and its surroundings have always been the avant-garde of modern architecture in the US. Whether it is downtown with the 1927 Ace Hotel, or in Hollywood with the 1962 Garcia Residence, these architectural landmarks have grown old and need maintenance. And renovation can be tricky on a private building that has become part of the city’s legacy. The main task of such renovations is to bring our 21st century functionality and comfort while keeping the essence of the original creation. After several months of research, Marmol Radziner Associates found a way to add a wall of custom casework, reconfigure the master bathroom including it a spa, shower and bathtub while preserving the core of John Lautner‘s ideas. So no big changes for the Garcia Residence. We can still find the famous curved roof, the colored glass panels and the v-shaped supports that made this house so memorable. Only subtle improvements were made to keep it timeless as it first was.
