DROLET RESIDENCE BY NATUREHUMAINE

A Montreal row house renovated to suit a client passionate about cooking

The Drolet Residence is a two-storey urban row house located near Montreal’s Jean-Talon market. Rather than organizing the house traditionally, the clients requested that the bedrooms remain on the more private first floor and that the central living space be placed on the brightly lit second floor. And since the clients are passionate about cooking, they also requested the creation of a kitchen island as the centerpiece of the space.

Faced with these requests, the architects at NatureHumaine responded by creating double height foyer with a sculptural staircase that draws the eye upwards, inviting movement towards the second floor and the central living space. At the top of the staircase, the occupants are greeted with an open space, flooded with natural light thanks to a skylight that traces the ample kitchen island.

The living space juxtaposes dark soapstone counter tops and lacquered cabinets with cheerful wood veneer. Appliances are recessed and hidden, resulting in a clean and uncomplicated aesthetic that highlights the abundance of light.
