DONDEREN BARNHOUSE BY AATVOS

An affordable and attractive barn renovation in the Netherlands

By completing the Donderen Barnhouse renovation, Holland architects Aatvos wonderfully embodiedthe dream of every person buying an old barn in the countryside. They’ve transformed the ancient property into a contemporary house that reflects modern life, while preserving the historic vibe.

Their idea was quite simple: conserve the classic barn shape and restore it with cheap and local materials, just as you would have done if you were building an actual barn back in the day. The large volume of this simple shape then allowed the architects to think of ways to reorganize the various living spaces according to the need of the family that lived there.

Then, they decided to transform the whole south wall into a large bay window protected by wood cladding for which Aatvos designed a nice, modern extension and a beautiful swimming pool. The result is a beautiful barn-house, mixing both contemporary and traditional elements, while using only affordable, local elements.
