BILSEY PLACE HOUSE BY JAMES RUSSELL ARCHITECT
An Australian abode that breathes
Bilsey Place House is a structure that creates a dialogue with its surroundings. Located in Fortitude Valley, Australia, the residence was designed by Brisbane-based James Russell Architect who sought to prioritize livability rather than to conform.
The structure beautifully incorporates the exterior and interior. Large screen doors allow for a breeze and can be tilted with the push of a button to provide gradual shade while encouraging a conversation with the street. A central courtyard serves as a lush focal point for a series of entirely open living areas, while curtains serve to close and define specific spaces when needed.
An attic is constructed with single-layer brick walls, creating an area that is “raw and technically outdoor”. The ebb and flow of wind, sunlight, conversations and movement forges a sense of connection and community beyond the house’s walls.
