BIG & SMALL HOUSE BY ANONYMOUS ARCHITECTS

A small house that offers a big amount of volume

Set in the Mt. Washington neighborhood of Los Angeles, the BIG & Small House by Anonymous Architects packs BIG volume into a small house. The architects began with a tiny, sloping lot that was half the typical minimum size. By resting the house on four piles, they allowed access to the space between the house and the lot, preserving precious outdoor space. They also created a unique geometry by matching the house to the lot shape of an asymmetric parallelogram. Interior volume is shaped through the use of partial walls that divide the house without blocking light and air. The partial walls also permit the central room to have high ceilings, contributing to an overall impression of volume despite the small footprint.
