AIA HONOR AWARDS: THE PIERRE BY OLSON KUNDIG

A contemporary American architectural icon receives high recognition from the AIA

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has announced the winners for this year’s Institute Honor Awards for Architecture, the most prestigious architectural prize in the United States. Among them is the Pierre by Seattle-based architecture firm Olson Kundig.

Literally named “the stone”, this retreat snuggled in the rock is made of well-adjusted constrasts. From the straight concrete lines taking root in the rough rock base, to the cosy warm interior facing the cold lands of Washington, not forgetting the huge window façade for the main room and these cave-like narrow corridors and rooms directly carved in the rock, all of these opposing forces, all of these contradictions balance each other, creating a soothing and safe retreat. No wonder the heart of the Pierre is an enormous fire place that would make medieval royalty jealous! Last but not least, the residence is topped with a green roof. The Pierre then embraces its location and appearance, becoming fully a luxurious cave and reviving the memories of our childhood dreams.
