A1 HOUSE BY A1ARCHITECTS

A countryside cottage in the middle of Prague

The A1 House by A1Architects is a bit of an anomaly. In the East part of Prague, Czech Republic, you can find a few small cottages that instantly take you back in time to the far-removed countryside. These preserved houses have seen the city grow around them, while they were busy staying the same. And although A1Architects have modernized them, part of the architects’ work was to preserve the impression that these cottages are completely separate from the current time and place.

Architecturally speaking, what seemed like simple country houses from the outside turned out to be a bit more on the inside. The architects were surprised to find rooms with vaulted ceilings and decided to keep these elements into their renovation project. And though the old houses only had six small windows, when you see the house now, it’s very bright and warm.

The reason for the change comes from the smart choices made by A1Architects. First, they’ve decided to gather all of the old houses and the new one under one roof, thus connecting all the different parts. Then, to make sense and create harmony between the various elements, they’ve kept a central private garden that allows light to enter. The whole house is now open and facing the small courtyard as opposed to the street, which gives the inhabitants all the light and tranquility that they would get in the countryside.
