the goods line: first phase of sydney's linear park opens to the public
the green corridor, which occupies a former freight rail route, features a series of integrated platforms that can be used for a variety of recreational activities and events.
the route takes pedestrians past some of sydney’s most eye-catching new landmarks, including frank gehry’s brick-clad university building.
‘the revitalization is expressed via a singular move’, explain architects CHROFI. ‘the laying of a new datum, a precast concrete ‘figure’, onto the existing railway corridor, articulating the site’s history and concurrently telling the story of today. these precast concrete panels form the paving, edges, steps, benches and seating as an integrated prefabricated piece. they are a re-tooling of an industrial element to a social purpose using digital fabrication process.’
commissioned by the sydney harbour foreshore authority, the opening is the first phase of the project’s development, which will also include the redesign of an adjacent plot named ‘the goods line south’. once complete, the both sections will total approximately 500 meters in length.
