oppenheim architecture renovates 18th century kirchplatz residence
a farmhouse built in 1743 in basel, switzerland, has undergone a transformation under the creative eye of international studio oppenheim architecture and design.
the renovation has resulted in a new single family residence as well as an office located within the rugged timber walls of the historic structure. the overall form was maintained so as to respect the architecture that marked a period of time in basel, however markedly contemporary elements hint at the updated use while still paying homage to the existing vernacular.
large apertures were created to provide plenty of natural light within the spaces, especially on the front facade that contains a large portion of the building removed and replaced with glass to form an outdoor patio and entryway, still keeping the original form through a series of slender joists and columns outlining the original elevation. once inside, a double-height space lends to the open nature of the interior marked by stark white walls. below grade, the residence opens up into a sunken patio surrounded by white concrete walls. a series of cascading steps form stairs to the back yard above and serve as planters that make an angled green wall.
