charles rose architects completes modern home on martha's vineyard island

american firm charles rose architects was commissioned to design a single family vacation home in chilmark, on martha’s vineyard, massachusetts.

located adjacent to an agricultural area, with distant views to the atlantic ocean, the site is limited by a deed restriction. the rule stated that the maximum height of the structure could not reach more than six feet above grade at the plot’s highest point.

the design team responded to the situation by sinking the upper floor into the hillside to the north, and stepping a lower level down the slope. to capture the view of the ocean and the surrounding landscape — some of which had been lost due to the restriction — a green roof deck and terrace were created.

quality of light and shadow were the design’s primary focal points. angular shapes and overhangs respond to the land, as well as optimize the natural light throughout the interior. multiple terraces — including the roof — offer various vantage points and gathering places. cedar shiplap is used on the exterior, which blends the contemporary home into the historical location.
