elding oscarson revives architectural history with molle by the sea
‘molle’ is a house for a couple and their child that seeks to revive the open-minded, experimental architecture of the area that is so closely tied to its social roots. scandinavian studio elding oscarson was adept at finding this common ground with the client in order to bring a refreshingly new type of building to molle, which has become a more architecturally conservative area since its radical beginnings.
the site provides a series of challenges and features which encouraged the uniqueness of the design and as a result forms a house that enjoys views in all directions rather than focusing each room towards the sea.
the structure is located on a small plateaued portion of the site, above a pre-existing ice cellar and a stone garage emerging from the dropping topography. an asterisk-like footprint with three wings projecting to the various corners of the site delineate private yards of different characteristics. the ground floor is based upon a regular grid of slender steel columns which provide the only structure and one of the few opaque elements. the plan is clad in full-height glass panels that allow the exterior to frame the interior and allow the owners the constant enjoyment of the scenic surroundings. upstairs the bedrooms are fitted within a more opaque form clad in large format douglas fir planks that provide more privacy and introduce a new material to the street. openings of various sizes relate to the spaces they are located in providing more directed views.
