fraunhofer institute for marine biotechnology by müller reimann architekten

the ‘fraunhofer institute for marine biotechnology (EMB)’ in lübeck, germany has an understated presence that communicates its purpose as a intensive research facility. the building, designed by berlin-based müller reimann architekten, has a striking structural form that sits proudly within its setting.

above the lightly-colored base, is a rigorous modular system of alucobond pilaster strips. the element’s diagonal folds draw attention to the structure’s façades and instill a sense of vigorous rhythm.

inside, a large, light-filled atrium paired with sea-green paint gives the interior a sense of lightness. an open staircase provides connection between all floors, and the atrium itself serves as a foyer for surrounding conference rooms.
